Menu Plan: 9/28-10/4

There are a lot of perks to menu planning, something that I faithfully did for the first few years of my marriage… until I had a baby and life got cRaZy! However, after 15 months of reasons and excuses not to menu plan, namely one adorable little boy, it is time to get back into this routine! Here are the main reasons why menu planning is helpful essential to my family:

  • Decreases my stress by reducing chaosI have enough to think about throughout the busyness of the day without getting to dinner time and having the pressure of figuring out what on earth we are going to have for dinner. When I menu plan, dinner is already thought out, groceries are purchased and prepped & all I have to do is pull out the ingredients and throw them together. Even better, if I have planned a slow cooker meal, I just toss the ingredients into the slow cooker and there is no prep work at the end of the day!
  • Reduces wasteI’ll admit it, I cannot stand to waste food! We rarely waste anything just because I am such a frugal tight wad that I find a way to either use or preserve any left over ingredients, but I know that is not the norm. Many people who have ingredients without a plan to use them end up wasting hundreds of dollars per year on wasted food, especially produce. When you will plan, all of that delicious food gets used up & what doesn’t get used one week can be planned into the next!
  • Reduces grocery costsThe last point leads into this one. Less waste = less money spent on groceries. When you have a plan for each item in your refrigerator/pantry, you don’t have to worry about that extra pound of squash staring at you or ending the week with a jar of blueberry syrup, a can of clams and four carrots (because who wants to make a meal with only those ingredients?!?).
  • Keeps tummies full… aka helps my marriage thrive!Unfortunately, when I fail to menu plan, we frequently have multiple ingredients in the refrigerator and pantry that don’t necessarily go together (see the above mentioned) or I have a hard time scavenging to find something to put together at the last minute. When I menu plan, there is always plenty to eat… and that makes the husband happy, which it turn makes for a more peaceful marriage! 😉

Different people have different methods of menu planning and what works for one family may not work for another, but the important thing is no matter what your preferred method, make a plan! At this stage of life, I find that what works for my family is making two different lists. I make a weekly meals list that includes the recipes I want to use for the week (plus a few extra) and then I make a tentative & flexible calendar to schedule when those meals will be made/eaten.

Meals For The Week of 9/28-10/4

FOOD TO PREP (this is my list of what I still need to prepare)

As you can see, I have not “planned” for making treats. Those recipes I just keep in my arsenal for when I get the urge for a treat, but I don’t want them to be scheduled into the meal plan. Obviously, we will not make and eat all of these meals in just one week, but this gives me some flexibility as many of the recipes include the same fresh ingredients & I can choose to make one recipe or another without being wasteful. What I don’t use up this week will go onto the menu to be used for next week. If I have spared time, I may also make an extra meal to freeze and pull out for a quick dinner on a busy night.

Do you meal plan? What are your best meal & menu planning tips?

October Unprocessed: Recipe Inspiration

Have you heard about the October Unprocessed challenge? As it is right before the start of the holidays, October is a great time to reset your body and your taste buds to crave healthy food rather than junk.

This year I will be concentrating on a few different goals during the month of October:
– Eating whole, unprocessed, nutrient dense foods
– Dairy/gluten & mostly grain free
– The grains we do consume will be rice & corn
– No sugars in any form but fruit & honey, and limited quantities of those

I already have a few events on the calendar during October where I know I will probably not stick with eating according to these guidelines, but I plan to aim to eat this way 99% of the month, and 100% of the month while I am in my own home or cooking for myself and my family.

I know myself well enough to know that if I want to meet these goals, I have to plan ahead. I love interesting food, so I need meals using ingredients that I love so that I won’t have such awful cravings for sugar. Some of my favorite foods are avocados, bacon, sweet potatoes, eggs, apples, beef, pork, salmon, shrimp, and all sorts of veggies, so I looked for recipes that I could center around those ingredients. I also looked for recipes that include my favorite spice combinations such as curries, garlic, dill, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and cumin. If you like these ingredients, then you are sure to love the recipes I have chosen!

Here is a round up of recipes to inspire these healthy eating habits (all recipes are gluten free, grain free, dairy free & refined sugar free)…

Essential Oils 101: The Premium Starter Kit

premiumstarterkit

And now we arrive at one of my favorite things about Young Living… The Premium Starter Kit!

Most of us are living on a pretty strict budget these days, myself included. A few years ago when I first learned about Young Living Essential Oils (YLEOs) and tried them out, I loved everything about the products immediately… except the price tag. How could I afford to use these oils?

The sweet ladies that taught me about YLEOs mentioned to me that I could sign up as a distributor to receive the 24% off retail (wholesale) pricing. “Yeah… but, what’s the catch?” I thought to myself. I was told that there was NO CATCH! As a distributor I was not obligated to actually sell any products. I could sign up strictly to get the discount on purchasing products for my own use. “But how much do I have to spend each month to get that discount?” I thought. NO MONTHLY PURCHASES! The only requirement was that I spend $50 product value per YEAR and I had one year from my sign up date to spend that. “Um, for real???” 50 PV is the equivalent of just a couple of bottles! I knew I would want to buy at least a couple bottles in a years time as I was looking to grow my personal oil collection!

But… what if I decided I didn’t want to make that 50 PV purchase within the year? Would there be a penalty? Nope! NO PENALTY! If you decide not to make another purchase, you are simply put on an “inactive” status. It’s no risk to you.

Of course, as a distributor I had the option to turn my love for essential oils into a home business, but I wanted to make sure that I really, really loved the products before I did that, so I just bought the oils at wholesale price to use for myself and my family members… and now a few years later, I am sharing what I know & selling them as a business because I really do love YLEOs!!!

So, let’s lay this out in an easy-read format…

The Premium Starter Kit includes:

  • The Everyday Oils Collection (retail $163.16)
  • The Aroma Diffuser (retail $117.11)
  • A 5ml bottle of Stress Away essential oil blend (retail $13.50)
  • AromaGlide™ Roller Fitment
  • Welcome to Young Living booklet
  • Essential Oils at a Glance user’s guide
  • Member Resource Guide
  • S.E.E.D. Sharing for Success booklet
  • Two sample sachets each of: Lavender, Peppermint, Peace & Calming®, Lemon, and Thieves®
  • Two NingXia Red® 2-oz. samples
  • Business cards sample pack
  • Member Agreement
  • Product Guide
  • Access to wholesale pricing (24% discount off retail prices on all products)
  • The opportunity (but no obligation!) to create a home based business

And if that weren’t enough, I personally offer the following to my personal Young Living down line team. This is something only offered by me, just because I love YLEOs and my down line!!

  • Option to order with the monthly group order to receive cheap (and sometimes free) shipping and still receive your wholesale pricing
  • Access to my exclusive down line only Facebook group
    • Where I share the latest YLEO information
    • Special giveaways
    • Answer questions
    • Access the team support group
    • An online community to learn & share about using YLEOs
  • The Everyday Oils quick usage guide –  an index card sized flip book I have put together on how to use the oils found in the Everyday Oil Collection. This reference guide is small enough to fit in your purse so that you can take it on the go & easily remember how to use your oils!

And now the big question…

HOW MUCH DOES THIS STARTER KIT COST???

Everything above your will receive for $160.

WHAT??? That’s how less than the cost of the Everyday Oil Collection alone!!!!!

Yes, it is. This starter kit has a retail value of nearly $400. And THAT, my friends, is why I am so excited to share this offer with you!

Essential Oils 101: Diffusers

aromadiffuser

As you have read through the Essential Oils 101 series, have you noticed a trend in how many times Young Living essential oil diffusers are mentioned? That’s because although not all essential oils are safe for topical and/or internal use, almost any essential oil can safely be diffused! A good diffuser is a must-have for any essential oil junkie!

Reasons to use diffusers:

  • Uplift mood
  • Reduce depression
  • Ease anxiety
  • Calm atmosphere
  • Increase mental clarity
  • Increase alertness
  • Increase focus
  • Deodorize / freshen
  • Sanitize
  • Eliminate pathogens
  • Fight respiratory symptoms (cold, cough, congestion, etc.)
  • Relieve allergy symptoms

Young Living sells multiple types of diffusers. You should pick which diffuser would work best for you based on your individual needs. Here are links to the different diffusers:

The Premium Starter Kit includes the Aroma Diffuser. I have found that this diffuser (the Aroma Diffuser) works very well and meets all of my at home needs. When out and about or on a trip, I like using the Travel Fan Diffuser because it is light, compact, works well in small areas & packs up easily.

What questions do you have about diffusers? How have you used diffusers with your essential oils?

Essential Oils 101: Joy

joy

The last oil in the Young Living Everyday Oils Collection is a blend called “Joy.” This oil blend is a mixture of Bergamot, Ylang ylang, Geranium, Lemon, Coriander, Tangerine, Jasmine, Roman chamomile, Palmarosa, and Rose. Joy is calming, uplifting, and can be used on children. This is also a great blend to have on hand for any woman when it’s near or during “that time” of the month because Joy can not only relieve menstrual cramps, but also balances emotions. One caution with this oil is that it can cause photo sensitivity, so avoid large amounts of direct sunlight within 12 hours of using. Joy is also an interesting blend because it works well when applied over the heart area. A good way to remember this is that we all want to bring “joy to our heart!”

Some uses for Joy essential oil blend:

  • Alleviate menstrual cramping

panaway

If you suffer from muscle and joint pain and discomfort, then the essential oil blend I am talking about today may be just the relief you having been looking to find! Young Living’s PanAway essential oil blend is a mixture of wintergreen, helichrysum, clove and peppermint. The combination of these oils works wonders on all types of soreness. Due to the ingredient wintergreen, this product is not safe for use with young children or on cats, but it does come with a child safety seal to keep little prying fingers from getting into trouble. When using PanAway, the method of use is pretty much the same for almost every need… “dilute and apply to affected area!” You can use this oil blend to replace common products such as Bengay, Icy Hot, Aleve, Motrin, Advil, Midol, etc. You will want this one in your first aid kit at all times!

Essential Oils 101: Valor

valor

This essential oil blend is one of the most coveted items in the Young Living product lineup. The main reason being that Young Living Valor essential oil blend is known for enhancing the properties over other essential oils when used in combination with them. Valor is frequently out of stock & when it is not out of stock, it becomes that way fast! However, it comes in the Everyday Oils Collection along with the 9 other oils I have been talking about recently. Unless you have sensitive skin, dilution is not always required when using Valor. Because it works directly with the nervous system, this blend of spruce, rosewood, blue tansy & frankincense promotes feelings of strength and courage & has a lovely scent as well.

Valor got its name because Roman soldiers bathed in the ingredients in it before going into battle in order to promote strength and courage (as stated above, this happens by the oil properties working directly with the nervous system).

Some uses for Valor essential oil blend:

  • Promote feelings of strength & courage
    • Apply a drop or two to your neck area when it’s time to have a serious talk with your boss, friend, or teenager
    • Diffuse before a funeral or another stressful scenario
  • Uplift mood
    • Dilute in carrier oil and apply with massage
    • Diffuse in your diffuser
  • Ease anxiety
    • Rub on wrists
  • Release tension
  • Snoring
    • Apply to the right big toe before bed & you will sleep without snoring!
  • Sleep apnea
    • Rub a few drops on your feet before bedtime
  • Back pain / injury
    • Apply to back & base of spine to ease pain and promote spine alignment
  • Stiff neck
    • Rub two drops directly onto your neck
  • Reduce bruising
    • Apply directly to affected area
  • Ease joint pain
    • Rub directly onto affected joint area
  • Sciatica pain
    • Apply 2 drops to the heels of the feet
  • Release tension headaches
    • Rub into affected area (temples, forehead, neck, etc.)
  • TMJ
    • Rub a few drops on the jaw once at morning and again at bedtime until the pain stops
  • Calm hyperactive children / increase focus
    • Apply to great toes before bedtime or at other times of day
    • Diffuse in your diffuser

Essential Oils 101: Peace & Calming

peacecalming

Ready for something relaxing? That’s just what you will get with Young Living Peace & Calming essential oil blend! I have only recently started using this wonderful blend of tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli & blue tansy, but I wish I had started using it sooner! Not only is it relaxing, but it smells kind of like candy!

Life can be stressful and there was one day in particular a few weeks ago where I had one of *those* days. You know the type of day I am talking about? The one where nothing seems to go according to plan and by bedtime you find that you have a headache, tense shoulders, a furrowed brow, a racing mind & a bad attitude? Please tell me I’m not the only one that finds myself in this situation at times. Well, the first thing I would recommend in this scenario is to spend time meditating on Philippians 4:8 and praying to God through Jesus name, but while you’re doing that, here are some ways that this great oil blend can relieve the tension as well…

Some uses for Peace & Calming essential oil blend:

  • Promote relaxation, decrease stress/anxiety, thought clarity
    • Add a few drops to a hot bath to unwind after a long day
    • Massage on the reflex points of the feet and back of the neck for a soothing and relaxing effect
    • Rub on soles of feet to release tension and promote a good night’s rest
    • Rub on a child’s great toes at night to promote restful sleep
    • Diffuse in your diffuser
  • Promote peaceful atmosphere, decrease stress & uplift mood
    • Combine with a carrier oil and apply to wrists and behind ears for a subtle perfume
    • Rub Peace & Calming essential oil blend behind overactive pets’ ears
    • Diffuse to calm overactive children and/or apply to the soles of their feet
    • Diffuse in your diffuser
  • Teeth grinding
  • Anxiety
    • Rub a drop on the back of the neck at the base of the skull
  • Calm restless legs
    • 2-3 drops rubbed onto legs
  • Travel
    • Inhale on an airplane to decrease flight anxiety
    • Use in a car diffuser to decrease stressful bickering children environment

Unlike most essential oils, dilution is not always required when using Peace & Calming. However, if you have sensitive skin I would recommend diluting. It is also considered suitable for use on children age 2 and older, but I do know some mom’s who have used it (diluted) on the soles of the feet of younger children to promote relaxation without any issue.

Essential Oils 101: Thieves

 thieves

I am so excited to have the opportunity to tell you about Young Living Thieves essential oil blend! This is one of my absolute favorite blends… actually, I think I would dare say it is the best essential oil blend. It is antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic, antifungal, and all around antipathogenic. It is my first line of defense for anything germ related. Before I get into the many uses for Thieves, I want to tell you the story of how this blend got its name.

Back in the 15th century, there was an outbreak of the black plague in Europe. Many died from this serious illness, but there was a group of thieves who would travel around, robbing the dead of their possessions and yet somehow they never caught the plague. It was later found that these robbers were using a blend of lemon, eucalyptus, cinnamon bark, rosemary and clove to prevent themselves from contracting disease. These are the ingredients that Young Living now uses to create their special blend called Thieves. This mixture is so effective that Young Living even has a specific line of household cleaning and hygiene products using Thieves oil!

Remember in a previous post I talked about how unlike pharmaceuticals, essential oils have the ability to penetrate to the inside of the cell wall? Well, that is exactly what Thieves can do! The result is amazing!

I have so many stories of how this oil blend has personally helped me and my family prevent sickness, shorten the span of contracted illness, and sanitize to protect against the spread of pathogens. I would not want to be caught without Thieves… especially in cold/flu season! Thieves oil should be always be used with a carrier oil because it contains essential oils that are considered “hot” (aka spicy) which could irritate the skin. The essential oils in this blend that are considered “hot” are clove & cinnamon bark. The amount of carrier oil you will want to use depends on your own sensitivity, so if you find the oil is too “hot,” try using more carrier oil. So now, onto the many uses for Thieves
