Essential Oils 101: Frankincense

Not only was it one of the three gifts brought to Jesus by the wise men, but this oil is also well known for its warm and sweet scent. Young Living’s Frankincense essential oil stands on its own & pairs well to enhance the effects of other oils when it is mixed. Frankincense is a gentle oil and safe for young children. In fact, many will apply a drop of frankincense on the top of the head and down the spine of their newborn directly after birth in order to help with spinal alignment. There are even studies that have shown this oil can help with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s, cancer, liver cirrhosis, and many other diseases. Wow!

Some uses for Frankincense essential oil:

  • Enhancing other oils
    • Frankincense can be used in combination with other essential oils to enhance their natural properties
  • Respiratory Infection (colds, coughs, pneumonia)
    • Inhale directly
    • Massage into the chest and throat and over the balls and arches of the feet
    • Apply a drop to a hot, damp wash cloth, place over nose & mouth and inhale deeply
    • Diffuse in your diffuser
  • Stress relief
    • Apply to temples
    • Rub a drop in your hands, cup hands together over nose and mouth, inhale deeply
    • Diffuse in your diffuser
    • Wear as a perfume
  • Asthma
    • Inhale directly
    • Massage into the chest and throat and over the balls and arches of the feet
    • Apply a drop to a hot, damp wash cloth, place over nose & mouth and inhale deeply
    • Diffuse in your diffuser
  • Disinfectant
    • Apply to cuts and scrapes
  • Depression / Uplift Mood
    • Wear as a perfume

  • Mental fatigue / clarity
    • Add to your bath water at the end of a long day, massage into your scalp or across your chest
  • Reduce inflammation
    • Take internally (a couple of drops in a capsule) or apply directly to inflamed area

    • Take a couple of drops in a capsule internally and/or apply to bottoms of feet
  • Brittle nails
    • Apply 1 drop on nails  to help strengthen brittle or weak fingernails

    • Rub 2-3 drops behind & below each ear

    • Apply 1-2 drops of on temples and/or back of neck

    • Inhale 1-2 drops via steam as needed

    • Apply to lower back to ease pain & calm senses

    • Add several drops to bathwater or a foot bath, rub into hair or receive during a foot massage as frequently as possible
